A fundraising update!

Olá!

I am back with another update on my fundraising efforts. It has been a busy few months since I last posted and I feel I should update you all with where I am at. Since August there have been a lot of changes so here are just a few:

  1. I have completed my internship with Macmillan Cancer Support - a FANTASTIC experience! It was brilliant working with such a fantastic team in the West of Scotland and I was sad to see the end of my 3 months. But I am now moving on to other exciting things! I have just started my new job at Alzheimer Scotland as the regional fundraiser for Glasgow, East Dunbartonshire and Lanarkshire. This is a new challenge and I am so excited to be part of such a great organisation doing what I enjoy the most.
  2. Due to the busy period that comes with preparing for and starting a new job, my fundraising has been rather limited. I am getting quite concerned about reaching my total if I am honest! I am slowly collecting lots of items to sell online to raise money for the trek, as well as making bunting, crafts and my favourite - reindeer dust! (More details to be announced shortly!). To try and boost my fundraising as much as possible I have also set up a Text to Donate number. This is an easy, fast and simple way to sponsor me for my Brazil Trek. All you have to do is text LEJS92 with your donation to 70070. E.g. LEJS £5 to 70070.
  3. I have set up a Facebook page for my trek too! The link is here: https://www.facebook.com/sendlauratobrazil I'll be posting all my updates on there, as well as links to interesting articles, videos and pictures that relate to my cause. Feel free to like the page and share wherever you can.
  4. I am in the final stages of writing my letters to family, friends and corporate links to ask for donations. I will be sending these out in the next few weeks so hopefully my total will start to increase.
  5. I completed the Great Scottish Run 10k! This was TOUGH. After running 4 half marathons over the last few years I was slightly disappointed with myself that I did not manage to achieve the half here in Glasgow. However, my training was not as intense as it should have been so I was very grateful on the day to only be running 10k! It has inspired me to get back to the gym and get working even harder to prepare for Brazil 2015. You can still sponsor me for the run on my Brazil 2015 sponsorship page: https://www.justgiving.com/sendlauratobrazil/ Below are a few pictures from the day.

After - a wee bit pink!

So that is just a brief overview of everything that is going on in my world of fundraising for my Brazil trek! If you have any ideas for ways I could fundraise, if you would like to help out, or if you have any contacts that you think would be useful then please let me know. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am in the planning process of a bucket collection in the West End of Glasgow so if anybody fancies giving up a few hours to help out - get in touch!!!

One man's rubbish is another man's treasure....

Olá!

It has been a while since I have updated you all on my fundraising! It has been a busy month with my internship at Macmillan Cancer Support and constant job applications! There has been progress in the fundraising department though. I have spent the last few weeks going through all my old clothes, CDs, DVDs, electronic (the list goes on) searching for items that I can sell to help raise funds for Brazil. So far it has been successful, and I am still finding more things to get rid of. My family have also been getting involved! I have had iPod's, suits, shoes, and even a deep fat fryer to sell for my fundraising! Thanks Family!!!

I am also in the process of constructing my fundraising letter to send out to family, friends and corporates. I still have a long way to go to reach my goal of £4000, but all these small steps are helping me get there!

Fit and healthy...

Olá!

I have just returned from the doctors after having my medical forms all signed off! The forms are now in the post, heading first class to the Marie Curie Events team. Once the team have 'ok'd' my physical fitness, I will be 100% confirmed as a member of the trekking team.

Since my last post I have had a brainstorming session to come up with some fundraising ideas. I will post my full list up here shortly! I have also done a couple of walks around the Glasgow area to start to build up my fitness.

Small steps towards the big goal!

Let the journey begin!

Olá!

Thank you for visiting my blog documenting my journey to the Brazilian Rainforest! As this is my first post I feel I should fill everyone in on the hows and whys of what I am doing...

In April of next year I will be embarking on one of the toughest challenges I have ever signed up to! I will be taking part in a 9 day trek through the Boccaina National Park in Brazil. Made up of mountains, waterfalls and rainforest, it is sure to be a challenge!
I am doing this in memory of my Grandpa who passed away in April 2014 after being diagnosed with a rare bowel cancer. Marie Curie nurses, along with nurses from Rowcroft Hospice, enabled my Grandpa to come home at the end of his illness and this was a great relief to both him and all of our family.
This trip to Brazil really caught my attention due to my Grandpa's connection with the location. Grandpa wrote a short story about a meeting he'd had with a young boy in Rio de Janeiro, a meeting that had a profound affect on him. Grandpa asked for this story to be read at his funeral, and I was very happy to have been able to do so.
Between now and April I need to raise nearly £4000 to fund the trip and raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. This is more money than I have ever had to raise, and I am sure this will be a challenge in itself! If you want to donate online you can head to https://www.justgiving.com/sendlauratobrazil and donate via JustGiving.

I have created this blog to document my journey to Brazil. I will discuss my training, fundraising, highs, and lows in the run up to this fantastic experience, for a fantastic cause. If you want to be involved with anything or help me to fundraise in any way then please get in touch!

This challenge, and my journey to Brazil, will be an emotional one, but I hope that it will be a fitting tribute to an amazing man.
